Where There's Smoke . . .

. . . there's tasty beef!

We host Christmas every year.  The number of people changes year to year, but usually there is a dozen of us.  I like to cook and have gotten pretty adept at making a nice meal.  I used to make a turkey for dinner, but the last few years we've had beef tenderloin.  It's easy and fancy all at the same time.

The day before, I get all the food prepped so that all I need to do is put things into the oven an hour or so before we're going to eat on Christmas.  The corn pudding and Catholic potatoes go into the warming drawer.  The beef and the veggies roast in the oven.  Simple.

Until the smoke started.

I opened the oven door to see what was the matter.  Apparently the butter I put on the tenderloin to hold the seasoning on doesn't do well at the high temperature at which the meat is roasted.

I started the vent.  And opened windows.  Himself opened doors.

The smoke alarm chirped.  There was a foggy haze in the living room and it was even worse upstairs.

Finally, the meat thermometer showed that the tenderloin was ready.  I should have taken a photo, it was picture perfect.  And, it tasted even better than it looked.

I think next year, I'll skip the butter!

TToT (14): A Little Bit of This and a Little Bit of That

It's been entirely too long since I've done one of these.  There's a lot of catching up to do.
- one-
Over Thanksgiving weekend, we decided one day that we were bored and the best time to start a new project was right before the holidays and right before I was to leave town for a work trip.  We decided to paint one of the bedrooms that we use as a sitting room.  I think this falls into the category of "We've done dumber things."  Just a couple of weeks ago, we finally finished (mostly) the painting and started getting the room back in order.

- two-
We replaced the ugly ceiling fan.  Thanks to Himself's good taste, we sent back the not so pretty light fixture I had picked out and installed this one.  Holy cow!  I didn't realize just how overwhelming the fan was in the room until it was gone.  The room feels so light and airy now.
- three-
I am very, VERY thankful for drop clothes when painting.  Ask me how I know.  Go on.  Ask me.  See that corner in the left of the picture?  When I was painting there I kinda tipped the paint tray over.  Thankfully, that green sheet on the floor in the right corner was moved over to the left corner when I did it.  No carpeting was harmed in this project. (Another "dumber thing" perhaps?)
- four-
I gave the hairy beast his annual haircut.  Over the winter he gets rather matted and starts to look like a Rastafarian pooch with all his dreadlocks.  He is quite patient with me, but needed a water break halfway through.
- five -
We have had some tremendously awesome weather here for the beginning of March.  Sunshine and temps in the sixties and seventies just revive my spirit and make me smile.
.
- six -
I've go my sewing "mojo" back.  I started on a quilt for my niece maybe a year ago.  Nothing difficult, but somehow I just kept avoiding it.  With some inspiration from this dear blogger (check out her Irish chain quilt about halfway down the post) I got back at it.  I finished piecing the top and will be bringing it to a local shop to be quilted.  More to come on that.

- seven -
That sewing mojo?  It continues on.  I started and am making great progress on a quilt for the sitting room.  We had collected fabric with which I had intended on making a "raggedy" quilt, but decided to just do a "regular" one.  Good decision.

- eight -
Have I ever mentioned just how much I love Amazon Prime?  I found a print I forgot I had and decided to frame it for the sitting room.  It's an odd size and I wanted a frame it without a matt, but wanted some color around it.  After looking at all the craft stores in the area for an unfinished wood frame, I searched Amazon and found just what I wanted.  Two days later it was in my hands and ready  for the dark green stain that we had leftover from another project.  It turned out better than I hoped.

- nine -
We celebrated Himself's birthday at Sis's house last weekend.  At her bedtime, my niece cannot possibly go to bed without a story or two.  Aunt Donna and Uncle Himself were more than happy to oblige.  It melts heart to see these two together!
- ten -
I took a vacation day on Monday and we celebrated the aforementioned birthday by going to the market and then out to lunch at one of our favorite restaurants.  It is in an old bank building, built when banks were grand and majestic.  Thankfully they kept all the beautiful architecture.  And, the food is as good as the ambiance!
Check out more goodness at  A Fly on Our (Chicken Coop) Wall.

Dumber Things (3)

Why does it seem like most of my Dumber Things involve the car?  I suppose it's a fact of life for me, but they just do.

I've been driving DH's car to work since it is a bit more trustworthy than our almost-thirteen-year-old Saturn.  When the odometer turned to all threes I just had to get a picture.  Wouldn't you?  It didn't matter that I was going 60mph in rush hour traffic!

The mileage on odometers intrigues me.  It marks places I've been, time I've spent, things I've seen.  It's almost like an age or an anniversary, it indicates some sort of shared history.

Don't worry, though, I won't be taking a picture when it's all 6s!

Dumber Things, Part 2

My guess is that most married couples have sayings and a language all their own.  One of ours, as I've mentioned before, is I've done dumber things.    I suppose life would be pretty boring if I didn't goof up now and then.  Here's my latest one:

My trusty little Saturn just turned 100,000 miles.  I was on the highway, at rush hour, and did what every intelligent, safe driver would do.  I took a picture.  And when the first one didn't come out, I took another.

I've done dumber things!

Dumber Things

A number of years before I even met DH, I bought a house that, let's say, needed a little TLC.  Over the years I worked my way through the rooms pulling down wall paper, painting, sewing, and replacing light fixtures. One room was left untouched, the living room.  It was what I thought good enough until I could "do it right".  It had pale yellow walls, except where paint had been pulled off by tape to expose the lovely institutional green beneath it.  The hardwood floors were stained where the previous owner's cat had its accidents.  And the furniture was mismatched hand-me-downs.

Fast forward a couple of years, DH and I celebrated our wedding in the fall and were preparing to host our first family Christmas.  Of course, the living room had to be done before that.  DH rented a sander and stripped the floors.  I painstakingly applied three coats of polyurethane to them.  DH then tediously removed the six plus coats of paint with a heat gun that covered the crown moulding.  He painted.  I sewed.  We moved his matching furniture in.  We hung new blinds.  He rag rolled over the newly painted walls.  We arranged the new end and coffee tables.  It was perfect.  Almost.

Just one thing stood in the way of perfection.  We just had to get the matching sofa table to put under the gilded mirror.  So we drove down to Amish country.  Three days before Christmas.  In a driving rain storm.  At night.  If you've ever been there, you'd know that it's full of narrow country roads with rolling hills and not a street light for miles and miles.   And buggies.  Lots of black buggies with dark horse and no tail lights.  We found out just how well our brakes worked that night.

By the time we made it home we were shaking.  We just looked at each other and one of us said, Now we can say we've done dumber things.

It didn't take much time before we had that opportunity.  About three days, in fact.  Christmas Eve as we were finishing the last of that project we realized we had no tree.  So off we went to the tree lot.  It was closed.  And so was the second.  Back to the first one, which was at a Protestant church, we went, where the last of their trees laid in a pile.   We knocked on the door.  We rang the bell.  No one was there.  So we did what all good people do.  We snatched a tree off the pile and drove home.  We stole our first Christmas tree!

Well, we've done dumber things!

PS - We did send them money for the tree afterwards, anonymously.
