What do you think? - UPDATED

Back in November Himself and I met up with Rebecca and The Man. We met at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling to see the Christmas Lights.  Awesome!

It was an great visit and we talked about everything and anything. One of the things she and I discussed was Jen’s recent announcement at Conversion Diary of next summer’s “a conference / gathering / party thing.” It sounded like a wonderful get away for Catholic women and mothers to relax and connect with others.

As we were sitting and talking about this at a resort, uh duh, at a resort, the thought came to me - why not do something similar on our side of the country geared toward wanna-be-moms and may-never-be-moms. As much as we know we are welcome at the Austin event, our needs are perhaps a little different from moms.

And then, as if to remind me of this conversation, one dear lady, T, posted the following on the St. Gerard FB group: "Brainstorm idea: Wondering if we could pull off planning a retreat somewhere in the middle of where we all live? This would take some interesting planning, perhaps late Spring or early summer."

Himself and I have gone many times to Oglebay and once stayed in the cabins with my family.  It's a comfortable, casual, relaxed sort of place where you can do as much or as little as you want.  I pictured a "girls' weekend" kind of like that - a couple of planned things, Mass, a talk or two, and time to hit the putt putt course, paddle boats, pool, zoo, or spa, and more time just to sit around and chat.

The cabins fit anywhere from 8 to 26 people and have fully equipped kitchens, fireplaces, heating & air conditioning, and in some cases, are carpeted.  Hardly roughing it!

What do you think?  Anyone interested?

* UPDATE *

* I contacted Oglebay this morning.  Apparently cottages are filling up fast.  The weekends with the most cottages availabe are May 2nd-4th or June 6th-8th The weekend of May 17th-19th, there is one 8 person cottage.  The rest of the weekends are filled up.

* I picture this as anyone who wants to come can - married or single, IF or you beat that beast.

  1. You know I'm in :) - and I might even be able to get a priest to come say Mass for us at the cabin - Fr. D's parish is in Wheeling!

  2. Is this for IF/subfertiles only, or what about singles?

    1. Oh, no,not just IF/subfertiles. I think it's for anyone who feels like they struggle in their vocation, who is feeling like they are still waiting.

  3. Yes! Ever since Jen and Hallie announced this get together I thought it was a great idea but knew it wasn't for me because their primary target is moms. I would be in for a girls weekend just so long as I have enough time to plan it out and get a plane ticket at a good price. I think singles should be allowed :)

  4. Kat posted exactly what I was going to say! I'm not sure I can get away from work, but if I can I'd love to go.

  5. I would love to go! May 2-4 would probably be my least preferred option, since we'd normally be starting the massive house cleaning before hosting Mother's Day brunch, but I could make any of them.

  6. June 6th-8th seem the best for me but if we have to squeeze in the May dates I can try and make it work. Thanks for checking Donna! I actually checked it out online yesterday when I read this and it looks beautiful :)

  7. Once you pick a weekend, I would try really hard to be able to come. It sounds like a great idea...totally worth a long drive. :)

  8. Donna, I don't think we can make it BECAUSE we beat the beast. But if you'd like to chat in advance, I'm more than happy to share my thoughts, experiences.

  9. May 17 - 19 is the only one that works for me - (The Pittsburgh half marathon is May 4 and I have a retreat to run the weekend of June 6 - 8). Even if I can't come, I'm happy to see if I can arrange a priest to come say Mass for you at the cabin if you'd like, just let me know.

  11. Wow, thank you for this.
I have to admit, I felt incredibly left out as a single woman of certain age when Jen announced their event. What do we have to do for people of the church to SEE us?
I will look into joining you. Right now I'm trying to figure out where you are!

  12. Can you give us an idea of the approximate cost of lodging for sharing a cabin? The website appears to be secretive, or of the " if you have to ask, you can't afford it" ilk!

    1. It is a bit hard finding the price info on their website, isn't it! I'm finalizing the details this weekend, but the cost for the weekend should be in the neighborhood of $125-$150, which will inclue lodging, meals, and some activities. Check back here Monday or Tuesday for an new post with updates.
