Weekends with Chesterton: Turn Back the Clock

There is one metaphor of which the moderns are very fond; they are always saying, "You can't put the clock back." The simple and obvious answer is "You can." A clock, being a piece of human construction, can be restored by the human finger to any figure or hour. In the same way society, being a piece of human construction, can be reconstructed upon any plan that has ever existed.

Linking up with Sarah at Amongst Lovely Things for Weekends with Chesterton.

  1. We start all of our work with the mantra amdg. Loved seeing that on your entry. I found your site through Sarah's blog. I think when we pray the Lord's Prayer we capture something important when we say Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Society is a human construction but should ultimately reflect divine love. It's wonderful that you invite readers to consider how stuck we make ourselves. Our God is infinite and His love without measure nor end. He exists outside of time and longs to bring us to His eternal love.

  3. Oh my. I love how Chesterton debunks the very notions we spout frequently and take for granted, and then replaces them with something more eternal. I think "What's Wrong with the World" is going to be my next read, because every time I see a quote from there, it makes me think.

    Thanks for linking up! :)

  5. I read this today too. My quote is from the end of the first chapter, but I am totally loving this work of his. Everything rings so true for our modern times. Are we really all that different or evolved than people of his time, I think not ;-) Enjoyed your blog on my first visit!

  7. Love Chesterton and how he really makes relativism look illogical. Great picture for this quote!

  8. One of my favorite Chesterton quotes. Up until now, I actually didn't know what book it was from, but I'm going to order it.
