Weekends with Chesterton: Fly!

Angels can fly because they can take themselves lightly.

I think this has to be one of Chesterton's more frequently misquoted lines.    The words 'can' are often omitted, leaving a big difference in meaning.  Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do it or do it frequently.  But then again, sometimes you just have to take yourself lightly!

  2. Okay, so this is where I'm finding the learning curve a bit steep with Chesterton. People take him out of context all the time. The other one I see taken out of context frequently is "anything worth doing is worth doing badly." Anyway, I'm finding it essential to read Chesterton in context! Thanks for helping me with this one. :)

  3. I was trying to write a blog post for this weeks link-up using that quote, and I gave up, for a few reasons. I'm glad I did, because I am one of those people who had the quote wrong! Thank you for the clarification, and for posting it.
